Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which One Should You Use?

Updated 31 October 2026 6 min read

Every QR code generator eventually asks you to choose between "static" and "dynamic". The difference matters more than it sounds: pick the wrong one and you may have to reprint thousands of flyers, or you may depend on a service you never needed. Here is a plain-English explanation.

Static QR codes

A static QR code stores the final content directly inside the pattern — a website address, a UPI payment link, WiFi details or plain text. When someone scans it, their phone reads that content and acts on it straight away. No server sits in between.

  • They work forever, even if the website that made them shuts down.
  • No one can track who scanned them, which is good for privacy.
  • They cannot be edited. To change the destination, you must create and print a new code.
  • The more content you put in, the denser and harder to scan the pattern becomes.

Static codes are the right choice for things that never change: UPI payment QRs, WiFi QRs, your permanent website homepage, a vCard you will not update, or a code printed on a product that must keep working for years.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead, such as qrbabu.com/menu24. When scanned, the phone opens the short link, and the service instantly redirects it to whatever destination you have set. Because the destination is stored on the server, you can change it at any time without changing the printed code.

  • Editable: point the same printed code to a new menu, offer or page whenever you like.
  • Trackable: see how many people scanned, when, and from which city and device.
  • Short content means a simple pattern that scans quickly even when printed small.
  • They depend on the service staying online. If the redirect stops working, the code stops working.

Side-by-side examples

  • Restaurant menu that changes every season → dynamic. Update the link instead of reprinting table stickers.
  • UPI payment QR at the counter → static. It never changes, and payments should never depend on a third-party redirect.
  • Flyer or newspaper ad for a campaign → dynamic. Scan counts show whether the ad worked, and you can redirect to a new offer after the campaign ends.
  • WiFi QR for guests → static. Phones need the WiFi details directly; a link would not work.
  • Product packaging → dynamic if you want to update instructions or run promotions; static if the code must work for the life of the product no matter what.
  • Business card → dynamic if your details change often, static if you want it to work independently of any service.

What to check before using a dynamic QR service

Because your printed material depends on the service, ask a few questions first. Can you export your scan data? What happens to your codes if you stop paying, or if a free plan changes? Will the service ever insert its own adverts or pages before your destination? Some services disable dynamic codes when a trial ends, which can break printed material overnight.

On QRBabu, dynamic QR codes and short links are free, with a fair-use limit of 100 per account. Scan history is kept for one year, and the limits are explained in our terms. You can create static codes without an account directly on the homepage.

Quick rule of thumb

If the content will never change and must always work, choose static. If you might change it or want to measure scans, choose dynamic.

Frequently asked questions

Do static QR codes expire?

No. A static QR code contains the content itself, so it keeps working for as long as the content is valid — for example, as long as the website or UPI ID exists.

Can I convert a static QR code into a dynamic one?

Not the printed one. You would need to create a new dynamic code and print it. The old static code will keep pointing to its original content.

Are dynamic QR codes slower to scan?

The redirect adds a fraction of a second, which users rarely notice. Their simpler pattern often makes them faster to read with a camera.
